Schools as Linguistic Space

Multilingual reality in schools in Vienna and Brno

This project is devoted to language in educational spaces, investigating how schools deal with the diverse linguistic repertoires of pupils. The starting point for this research is the observation that the social structure and language policies in schools demand separated forms of communication and not all components of the pupils’ repertoires have sufficient space in the school setting. The diversity of existing linguistic repertoires is treated differently in every school, hence, school-specific models have emerged. This project investigates these school-specific systems on the basis of four schools – two each in Vienna and Brno – on the individual level, the teaching level and the school level with regard to language-related positioning.
