Envy and Schadenfreude in the Teaching Context
Envy and schadenfreude are social emotions that arise in interaction with other people. Envy is an unpleasant feeling triggered by the success of others. Schadenfreude, on the other hand, describes the pleasure of another person's failure. There is still little knowledge about both negative emotions in children and young people, especially in the context of education and learning.
The central aim of this project is therefore to increase our knowledge about envy and schadenfreude in the context of school. As social comparisons between pupils - a core prerequisite for envy and schadenfreude - become increasingly important after the transition to secondary school, secondary school pupils and their teachers will be studied. The findings will provide a substantial contribution to theory building as well as initial implications for pedagogical practice.
