Language Teaching and Learning Research
Our research at the Language Teaching and Learning Lab (LTLL / Laboratoire REAL : Recherche en Enseignement et Apprentissage des Langues) is concerned with the teaching, learning and use of language/s in the context of linguistic diversity. We focus on three main areas: the subject in its emotional, motivational and empowering/disempowering linguistic constitution, discourses on multilingualism and languages, as well as the professionalisation of teachers for multilingual contexts. These areas are interconnected and mutually reinforce one another. Digitalisation is a key perspective that permeates all three focus areas, particularly in its role in supporting language learning and use. Our research extends beyond institutional teaching-learning contexts, emphasising the crucial link between language use and language learning.
The LTLL/REAL research area is inherently interdisciplinary: applied linguistics, professionalisation research and subject didactics are the main reference disciplines. The teaching provided by our researchers is integrated into study programs in Teacher Education, Linguistics, and Romance Studies. Third Mission is a central component of our department and manifests itself through various collaborative projects.
Structurally, the Language Teaching and Learning Research Unit at the University of Vienna belongs to the Centre for Teacher Education and the Department of Linguistics.
